The Global Fitness and Wellness option prepares students for professional careers in fitness. Thanks to our unique, scientific-based program, Global Fitness and Wellness majors can take advantage of rapidly growing employment opportunities in exercise and health programs. Many graduates of this program enjoy successful careers as fitness specialists at health clubs and sports-medicine centers. They also find employment as fitness leaders, technicians, health-promotion specialists and directors in corporate fitness and health-promotion programs. Several students who have completed the program have gone on to become certified exercise instructors or personal trainers certified by reputable organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

This program is the only one of its kind to offer three levels of field experience, which take place in a wide range of professional settings. For example, Kean students have interned at facilities such as Trinitas Hospital, Merck, Ford Motor Company, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Chubb.

• Preprofessional

Required of all majors, the preprofessional field experience provides students with 10 hours of observation in a setting where they can gain exposure to various career options.

• Junior Field Experience

Students complete 45 hours in a fitness setting of their choice. Under supervision, students learn basic testing skills in a hands-on interactive environment.

• Internship

Students spend 200 hours in a fitness setting and learn how to perform, evaluate and interpret exercise tests, evaluate clients, prescribe exercise programs and provide nutrition- and weight-management counseling for clients.
